Although each country has its own entertainment industries, Pakistani music is often a place for discovering music for Bollywood films. Refer to Chapter 3 for more on how Pakistan was formerly a part of India before Partition.

Indian Music Pops Off

Though Bollywood dominated the music scene in India for many decades, the introduction of channels via television and the Internet in the 1990s helped proliferate and advance the careers of several pop artists. Even though these artists often enjoyed short-term success, their mark on Bollywood and the Indian music scene is undeniable. Eventually, the pop genre that created a wave in India came to be known as Indipop, a term still used today to describe this genre.

Bollywood’s music scene differs from most other music industries in the way it presents artists and songs (flip to Chapter 7). Indian listeners stay faithful to individual songs more so than any single artist. Often, that means an artist develops a sound or becomes known for a particular type of track (like a sad love ballad) and is called on to sing in only that genre. That’s what made it difficult for pop singers in India in the 1990s and beyond to find continued success — they often had one or two hit songs before moving on to Bollywood in order to make more money and gain fame. However, a move to Bollywood meant that their songs often became more famous than they themselves did as the singer.
